The is the tale of a Norwegian who led an expedition to sail a raft across the Pacific, from Peru to the Polynesian Islands, to prove it could be done. Anyone up for a 4,300 mile trip on an open raft? Thor and his crew were, shortly after World War II.
Today we know the Vikings made it across the Atlantic, to mainland North America, long before Columbus. There are many who believe that Phoenicians, The Celts, The Chinese, The Polynesians, and maybe even Africans, all made it to North America long before Columbus. There are a handful of artifacts, and much conjecture, about ocean travel in pre-Columbian times. It's a great mystery unfolding in bits and pieces as time sails on.
More than 70 years ago, it was assumed by scholars that ocean crossings were not possible by humans before the 1400's. Adventurer Thor Heyerdahl thought the crossings were possible, and very likely in ancient times. No one believed him, so he built a raft and sailed the Pacific in 1947 to prove the crossing was possible. This is a short new piece promoting the 2012 movie about the story of Thor and the crew of the Kon Tiki. Here's the 2012 documentary about the Kon Tiki (full length).
Few may know, but there are some among the Chumash nation (Malibu area native tribe) that believe Polynesians sailed to this area, and traded with their ancestors.

Here's a great little edit of the 2016 Huntington Beach Air Show, the first year it took place, from a boat, off of the H.B. Pier. Roman Bojorquez put this video together. A relatively new, annual event in H.B., The Great Pacific Air Show, as it's officially called draws dozens, maybe a couple of hundred, boats to the Huntington Beach Pier area, as well as thousands of people watching from on shore. The next GPAS is scheduled for October 1-3, 2021. Here's their website to find out more.

21 years old and still ready for action, here's one of Marvin's first truck builds.
My name is Steve Emig, aka Steve the Blogger in this blog. I was a BMX freestyler in the 1980's. A zine I published led me to a job at BMX Action and FREESTYLIN' magazines in 1986, followed by several years in the BMX, skateboard, and the TV production industries. I followed that with a series of odd jobs, and began blogging seriously in 2008 when my taxi driving went downhill. I've written over 2,500 blog posts, across many blogs, which have drawn over 370,000 total page views. I met Marvin as a BMX rider in the 1990's, and I'm the guy publishing this blog for him. "The White Bear" is a nickname that came from a poem I wrote after getting dumped by a girlfriend. That's the name I'm known as to 90's BMX riders.
